For your consideration is this vintage hand-tinted and framed photograph of Iron Creek Canyon in Black Hills, South Dakota by Black Hills Studios Inc.. From the 1850s to the early 1900s, the hand-tinting technique was employed predominantly in portraiture in order to enhance a sitter’s facial features and clothing. But as photography became more accessible, hand tinting enriched ever more complex scenes. Soon, skilled colorists were quite literally blurring the lines between photography and painting. Hand-tinting is the tactile method of altering traditional, darkroom-generated prints. Colorists used cotton swabs to manually apply pigments —usually translucent oils but sometimes dyes or even tempera. Fine details were added with a stylus, pin, or oil pencils. This hand-tinted photograph is presented by Black Hills Studios in South Dakota and comes in the original wood frame. The photograph is titled at the bottom reading, "Iron Creek Canyon Black Hills, S.D." and to the right of that it reads, "Black Hills Studios Inc.". The hand-tinted photo shows good condition with no signs of obvious damage. The original frame is in good condition as well. The entire piece measures 19" L x 14 1/4" W.
