The lot features a Blackfeet Piegan from Northern Montana “War Lance” hunting spear from the ex-Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. The Blackfeet / Blackfoot piece exhibits a hardwood haft handle which is adorned with old trade beads, old turkey feathers (one is broken), a wrap of fur and a wrap of coyote fur hair tied on with old sinew as well as a drop of what appears to be human hair attached with an old Winchester brass lever action cartridge. The piece shows brass trade tacking and wraps of old Indian tanned hide and old trade clothe. Provenance: From the ex-Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection; noted as being collected from a family in Northern Montana at the Blackfeet Piegan Indian Reservation near Glacier National Park in the mid-to-late 1900’s by Aplan (verbal provenance). There is some fur loss and drying. The top shows an iron spontoon lance blade and the piece is called a buffalo hunting lance. Measures overall 7-foot 1 inch long.
