For sale in this lot is a Pikuni Blackfoot Native American Indian tanned pictorial buffalo hide. The hide depicts a "Pishkun", or in other terms, a "Buffalo Jump". The pishkun is a communal event, which occurred as early as 12,000 years ago up until 1500AD, when the Europeans introduced the horse. The entire tribe was involved in the buffalo jump, and can be seen in illustration on this hide. First, the most fleet young man of the tribe would disguise himself in a buffalo hide robe and place himself between the herd, and a precipice proper for the purpose. Once the man was in place, the remaining men would emerge from behind, and create a stampede. The buffalo would naturally follow the young runner, who had the dangerous job of securing himself once near the precipice. Often there would be wooden pylons, and funnels to insure the buffalo didn't scatter once near the cliff. Underneath the cliff, the rest of the tribe would prepare for the incoming herd. When the buffalo hit the ground, men armed with spears would ensure a kill. After the buffalo were killed, processing began. You can see the processing in illustration on the hide, first is smoking of the buffalo, followed by tanning of the hide, and processing of the meats. The hide is signed on the bottom edge, reading; "School of Life for the Pikuni - Dr Morris @ 2015 - Natoo Ang Skii - Rabbit Jump Boarding School of the Blackfeet". The Pikuni are one of three original tribes of the Blackfoot confederacy, from the Blackfeet Nation in Northwest Montana. Overall, the hide shows good condition on both sides, showing soft supple hide, and healthy fur, absent of shedding. The hide measures 63" wide, and 96" long from the tip of the tail, to the neck of the buffalo.
