The lot features a fantastic circa 1880’s beaded pipe bag from the Plateau region Native American Indians, attributed to the Blackfoot tribe. Provenance: Found to be an 1880’s Plateau Blackfoot example and sold in Dick Engel Auctions Cody, Wyoming in June 1998 (original photograph which is written on the back as such is included). The bag shows an Indian tanned hide in a traditional long pipe bag pattern, which is covered completely in a yellow ocher/ochre mineral pigment with long hand cut Indian tanned hide fringe at the base, along with adornments in all original 1800’s glass trade seed beadwork in a geometric pattern. The beadwork wraps around both sides showing a large section at the base, a single band running up both sides of the bag, and a band at the opening. The beadwork shows a geometric pattern with hourglass, cross symbols on a chalk white background in colors of Cheyenne pink, cobalt, greasy yellow, semi-transparent green, greasy butterscotch, and medium green. The piece is sinew sewn, an early beadwork quality. Overall, it is very well preserved, displaying little to no bead loss and has a partial stiffening yet supple hide. The bag has a small wear hole on one side and old sinew repaired cut on the other. Measures overall 30.25”L by 6.75”W.
