The lot features a very artful and attractive authentic original spontoon pipe tomahawk from the Blackfoot (Blackfeet) Native American Indians of Montana and dating to circa 1860-1870’s. The piece features a hand-forged Revolutionary War style spontoon blade head forged with pipe bowl that is forged from an early gun barrel. The hand cut rifling is visible on the inside of the pipe bowl. The forged iron head shows two basal processes bleeders that are curved upwards which is accented by the two-ridge eyelet hole and hand-filed chevron step to the long-ridged bowl. The spontoon blade of the tomahawk war club has a median ridge running down the entirety of the blade, a document attributed of early authentic spontoon tomahawks and presentation dag knives. The tomahawk also shows a ash wood haft that has a nice, mellow patina with a fine brass tacked design, using all solid brass period correct square shank trade tacks, and a nice large fully beaded and fringed drop attached. The tacks have varying degrees of tarnish. The beaded drop is made from Indian tanned hide and shows period correct typical floral patterns on a chalk white bade, which is correct for early Blackfoot beadwork. The beadwork is all done in correct glass trade seed beads of chalk white, corn yellow, greasy yellow, red, medium green, and semi-transparent green. Overall the piece displays very well and is one of the earliest Blackfoot Spontoon pipe tomahawks from the Montana people that has been brought to the public market. Overall the piece measures 21 inches in length with an additional 26-inch-long drop. The head is 8 ¾ inches long.
