Featured in this lot is this Bronze "Pescatorello" After Giovanni Varlese, circa early to mid-century. A straw hat wearing young man is standing on a rocky base, holding a spear in his left arm and holding a fish in his right hand, barefoot, with a basket of fish on the rock behind him. Shells and a crab are seen on the rock. The sculpture conveys a feeling of connection with nature and balance, reflecting the intimate nature of small and ancient daily gestures. Sculpture stands on a black marble plinth.
Giovanni Varlese (1888-1922) sculptor born and died in Naples. The artist belongs to the branch of the famous school of Neapolitan sculptors who, between the 19th and 20th centuries, stood out for their great skill and creativity. In this branch, the reference master, also for Varlese, was Vincenzo Gemito 1852-1929. From humble origins he became an artist of international fame, his portrait of Verdi is famous and the sculptures of the Fisherman and the Fisherman's Boy are famous and became a classic of Neapolitan sculpture.
