This lot features an 1858 Starr Double Action .44 caliber revolver, serial number 6762, owned by Black Bull a Brule Lakota Sioux warrior from the Indian Wars and who fought at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The revolver exhibits a 6 inch round barrel chambered in .44 caliber with a double action that has a top break or breach loading frame. The revolver comes with paperwork and was examined by The Guns of History. It was found to be marked with togia Lakota language markings. On the left side of the grip, “Black Bull – Brule – rode together – friend – Chicken” (illustration 1). On the right side of the grip, “Black Bull – Brule – fight – battles” (illustration 2) as well as on the bottom of the of the grip with Black Bull Brule (illustration 3). Black Bull was born in 1843 to Brule Lakota Sioux parents and like his father joined Chief Bull Dog’s Wazhazha Band of Brule. Black Bull rode with Bull Dog’s Band in the Indian Wars and fought at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, where he received a serious leg wound. He married Judging Woman in 1861 and had many children. After the Indian Wars ended, Bull Dog and his band surrendered at the Red Cloud Agency on March 1877, but then Bull Dog led his band into Canada in late 1877 and surrendered again in September 1881. They were transferred to the Standing Rock Reservation and in 1882 transferred to the Rosebud Reservation where Black Bull and his family lived out their days until his death in 1897. The frame is marked on the right side, “ STARR’S PATENT JAN. 15. 1856”; on the left side, “STARR ARMS Co. NEW YORK”. The cylinder, trigger and inside on the frame (under the hammer) is marked with the matching serial number of 6762. This revolver was manufactured between the late 1850’s to early 1860’s. The trigger has an adjustable slide which allows the user to set the trigger for double action or not. Currently the slide is up which, when the trigger is pulled rotates the cylinder and pulls the hammer back in one action. The hammer release button behind the trigger then can be pushed or the slide can be adjusted to hit the release button. Signed paperwork and illustrations included with the gun.
