This is an original bronze sculpture of a warrior by Buck MacCain (b. 1943- ) titled "Praying to the Hearing Spirit" from circa 1988. The bronze sculpture features a wonderfully and professionally crafted bronze construction mounted on a wooden shield that shows a Native Amerivan man holding a buffalo skull to the heavens with a quiver and his bow across his lap mounted on his horse. The plaque on the bottom of the shield reads as follows: Prayer to the Healing Spirit by Buck McCain ©1988FM. The bronze is marked on the base of the bronze with the artist signature: Buck McCain ©1988FM. Painter and sculptor Buck McCain was raised on a working cattle ranch in southern California near the Mexican border. In the late 1960’s Buck McCain, who is mostly self-taught, went to Europe for a year of independent study. Upon his return to America, McCain settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 1976 McCain attempted sculpture on the suggestion of Arizona sculptor and painter Ernie Berke. After Berke walked him through the process, McCain knew he really wanted to sculpt. He has created several monumental bronzes. Buck McCain is the 33rd Friends of Western Art’s Artist of the Year recipient. The condition of this bronze sculpture is well preserved with some patina adorning the bronze base and sculpture but otherwise shows a well preserved condition. The measurements of this bronze sculpture is 17 3/4" x 10" x 5 3/4". The collective weight of this bronze sculpture is 23lbs.
