Included in this lot of William "Buffalo Bill" Cody & William Deveny collectibles are five (5) vintage postcards and one vintage photograph.
Deveny was a friend of Cody, at times impersonating Cody as well. He was also part of Cody's Wild West Show from time to time. In 1900, Deveny was a Portland podiatrist. His side gig was more fun. Hre looked like Buffalo Bill, wore his clothes like Buffalo Bill, and claimed to be his cousin. When Buffalo Bill first brought his Wild West Show to Portland, the two posed together for a photograph and were near impossible to tell apart. "It has come to light that Cody was not larger than life, but there may have been two of him - the man known as Colonel Bill Cody, and a Portland, Oregon man, known as Dr. William DeVeny, a pioneer chiropodist...DeVeny not only resembled Colonel Cody, but evidently was a long-life friend, partner, and impersonator double. He often received messages from Buffalo Bill and would disappear for a week or two at a time, only to return just as mysteriously, loaded with money. Could it have been his cut of the gate?" wrote Don Holm in Frontier Times magazine.
Three items are of Deveny himself including the photo, one shows both together and two are of Buffalo Bill. The postcards are from 1910-1950, some have been colourized. The items are in very good condition, the cards measure 6"H x 4"W or smaller.
