This is an original early Buffalo Bill (aka William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody) Meerschaum pipe from circa 1889. The pipe was manufactured by Dutel-Gislon, a French maker active in the city of Montereau circa 1840-1895. These were offered at the Buffalo Bill Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders French 1889 tour. The pipe shows a bust of Buffalo Bill Cody himself in all the wonderful detail you would expect such as the iconic facial hair, long hair, and curved bill of his cowboy hat. The pipe bowl is found at the top of his cowboy hat. The pipe shows some wear and chipping with the back stem area broken off as shown. This is the most intact copy we have offered for sale. Overall an early piece most likely sold to someone at the show. The pipe shows the younger portrait/bust of Buffalo Bill, with most examples showing his more aged appearance. Measures 1.75"H x 1.5"W x 1.5"D. Provenance: From the Historical Native American Artifacts and Weapons private museum collection in Paris, France.
