Presented in this lot is the Memorial Edition, "Buffalo Bill's Own Story", 1917, copyright John R. Stanton. One of the most famous and well-known figures of the American Old West, Buffalo Bill's legend began to spread when he was only 23. This autobiography of William Frederick Cody (1846-1917), the larger than life American soldier, Army scout, bison hunter, and showman, includes his experiences in the early west with the settlement of the plains pony express, military guide, hunting buffalo and interaction with the Indians. Buffalo Bill started working at the age of eleven, after his father's death, and became a rider for the Pony Express at age 15. Later he served as a civilian scout for the US Army during the Indian Wars, receiving the Medal of Honor in 1872. He spent the later years of his life in his Wild West Show. In this book, his life long friend William Lightfoot Visscher gives an account of his death and burial of the great Western frontiersman, popularly known as "Buffalo Bill." The book is illustrated with rare engravings, illustrations, and photographs of Buffalo Bill, Sitting Bull, Chief Joseph, Kiowa Annie, Leading Hawk and many more. The green cloth bound stamped illustrated hardcover is in good overall condition, a photograph of Buffalo Bill is attached to the center of the front cover. Scuffing is noted to the cover edges, spine is loose but still attached. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing, no other obvious marring noted. Measures 6.25"W x 8.5"L x 1"D, weight is 1lb, 2oz.
