Presented in this lot is a rare colorized map, "Map of Principal Section of The Butte District Showing Properties of Butte-Knickerbocker Mining Co." circa 1896. Historical significance is that this map shows mines of the main players that turned Butte, Montana into the "Richest Hill on Earth": Marcus Daly, W.A. Clark, and F. Augustus Heinze. A mere ten plus years later the Panic of 1907 saw the collapse of the Knickerbocker Trust Company which at the time was one of the largest banks in the USA, and the collapse of the United Copper Company which saw Amalgamated Copper Company extend it's holdings and solidify it's position as king of the copper mining world. The map also shows the rail tracks of the defunct Montana Union Railway and the Butte-Anaconda & Pacific Railway, both being instrumental in the mining history of Butte. This map outlines all the mining claims in and throughout Butte which had hundreds by 1917, and eventually grew to over 11,000 claims! The map is in overall good condition, colours and writing are clear, some taped repair of a lower area tear, slight tears on the edges, foxing noted. Fully open, the map measures 14.75"L x 12.5"W, folded measures 7.5"L x 3.25"W
