Featured in this lot is this Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret Society Songye male mask out of the Democratic Republic of the Congo circa 1920's. The mask features a wonderfully and professionally crafted carved wooden construction that shows the male variant of these masks. Songye Kifwebe masks are distinctive, striated wooden masks from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, used by the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe secret society to enforce social control, uphold law, and connect with spirits. Characterized by bold geometric lines and protruding features, they feature male masks with high crests and red/black/white colors, while female masks are mostly white. The condition of this African mask is well preserved with a small chip out of the base of the mask and shows wear tot he finish adorning the face of the mask but otherwise shows a well preserved overall condition. The measurements of this mask are 9" x 6 1/4" x 4". The collective weight of this mask is 8oz
