Featured in this lot is an extremely rare, circa 1760-1780. Philadelphia Chippendale carved mahogany side/dining chair. It has elegant legs and back made of carved mahogany wood; elaborate acanthus, C scroll carved and pierced splat carving with decorated foliate cabriole legs and paw feet. Seat is covered with bright brocade floral design, carved top rail, trimmed in a thick bead design on front and sides, chair top edge is scalloped. This type of chair is not only very elegant and luxurious, but comfortable too. The carving and artistry of this chair is exquisite, and although the maker for these chairs is unclear, the popularity of the design has held for more than two hundred years.
Philadelphia Chippendale is a style of 18th century furniture made in Philadelphia and characterized by rich ornamental carving. Similar item sold recently at a Live Auctioneers auction for $18,000 and similar aged armchair is currently for sale at Chairish online for $45,000.
