The lot features a set of two 19th Century copper / brass trade bells / hawk bells from Fort Victoria British Columbia and the Hudson Bay Company. The set comes with an original, old collection tag which is marked, “From H.B.C. Old Warehouse 1859-1937 Victoria B.C. / # 193 – 1” Round Button Punched and A Bell Made From It”. Fort Victoria was established by HBC, the Hudson Bay Company, in 1843 as a depot for the northern Pacific trade. The Company’s main headquarters, Fort Vancouver, was too far from the British Columbia interior. In 1842, Chief Factor James Douglas found the perfect location that the Lekwungen people called Camosack, meaning “rush of water”. On March 14, 1843, the building of Fort Camosack, later renamed to Fort Victoria in honor of the reigning monarch, was underway. By 1858-1859 the Hudson Bay Company set up their trading post there in time for the Gold Rush to the Fraser River goldfields. This set shows a loop at the top and round body with something on the inside, giving a noise. Each is about 1 inch. U6.
