The lot features a fantastic, circa 1860 Osage Gunstock War Club with Spontoon blade from the DuPont family collection. The piece exhibits a notch-cut hand-forged iron spear or lance blade inset into the haft that protrudes 5 inches in length, commonly referred to as Spontoon blades. The wood haft handle is elaborately decorated with brass trade tacks of varying sizes and patterns; including three large silver tacks surrounded by concentric circles/ The blade has minimal oxidation from age and appears to have been cleaned at some point, a common practice of early collectors. There are two pierced holes below the gripping area which likely held a drop of feathers or beaded drop at one time. The grip area has worn. The hardwood haft has old brown and green mineral pigment paint remnants and a deep, shiny patina from honest age and use. The club shows file branding throughout. Provenance: From the ex-collection of the DuPont family from St. Louis, MO. Measures overall 22 inches in length.
