Featured in this lot is this Navajo 3-Ply Germantown salt and pepper rug circa 1865-1870. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted 3-Ply wool construction. Germantown yarn is plied, meaning there are multiple strands of yarn twisted together. Early Germantown yarn (circa 1868) was three-ply. By the early 1870s, four-ply yarn became the standard, producing a fine, even weave. The rug is natural wool colors with local vegetal dyes with sections of indigo dyed colors, purple colors, and bright red with crystal sections to the corners and the field is a unique coloration of salt and pepper with speckled off white and black coloration. The rug features the iconic Germantown ends that are added after the weavings are done. This rug is intricately styled and often colorful rugs were so aptly named because the yarn that they came from was produced in the now suburb of Philadelphia called—you guessed it—Germantown. One of the most unique and compelling aspects of Germantown rugs is that the fringe is added only after the rug has been woven. The condition of this Navajo rug is well preserved with some very slight fraying to the edges of the rug but otherwise is extremely well preserved for its age. The measurements of this Navajo rug is 71 3/4" x 37 1/2". The thread count of this rug is 341 threads per square inch approximately.
