Presented in this lot is a very large circa 1868-1912 Japanese Meiji Bronze Kijin-kei Mask Wall Hanging. Kijin Kei masks were used in rituals on New Year's Eve to repel demons and evil spirits from the local shrine or temple. These masks serve two purposes; the first is to portray devils that create disasters or cause the plague, and conversely, they are used to ward off evil spirits. Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and Snite Museum of Art, the University of Notre Dame, including African, Afghan and Asian artifacts. This guardian to the Buddhist temple exhibits the exaggerated facial features, elongated ears and eyebrows similar to other Japanese Buddhist masks. This mask has a rich patina throughout, slight surface oxidation present. Dents and scratches noted. Measures 11"W x 15.25"L x 4"D, weight 39lb, 14oz. Netsuke Mask.
