This is an exceptional set of beaded Indian hide and hard parfleche sole large moccasins from the Sioux Indians dating to circa 1870-1880’s. The set shows Indian tanned Great American Bison Buffalo hide with traditional Sioux geometric beadwork in a buffalo track pattern along with outstanding and rare beaded bifurcated split Indian hide tongue. The beadwork shows all period correct 1800’s glass trade seed beads being sinew sewn and in colors of chalk white, greasy yellow, medium green (pea green), cobalt, and red. The bases are hard sole parfleche rawhide showing a nice foot worn pattern and both medium height tops show the original Indian hide tie strap holding up the split tongue. The end of each split at the tongue shows rolled tin jingle dangle cones with some red dyed plume feathers. Provenance: From the estate ex-collection of Lois Ehlert, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and found to be an authentic 19th Century Sioux example by the experts at Hindman and Cowan’s. These are truly an excellent set with nice large size having the entire tops, sides, back and tongue covered in fine beadwork. The set is well preserved overall in condition with some very slight bead loss with mostly supple hide, some slight sinew separation at the toe of the right moccasin and some stiff parfleche rawhide soles having heavy patina. Measures overall 11.75”L along the sole by 4.25”W and 4”H at the ankle. One of the largest warrior men’s sets we have offered.
