This is a stunning set of circa 1870-1880 Northern Cheyenne Beaded Buffalo hide and parfleche hard sole child’s moccasins from the collection of Bruce VanLandingham Sundog museum & gallery with the original $1,650 tag still present. This is a fantastic, well preserved Indian Wars era set of moccasins and is comprised of Indian tanned Great American Bison / Buffalo hide with Bison / Buffalo parfleche rawhide hard sole bottoms being completely sinew sewn covered on the tops with classic Cheyenne geometric beindwork with early, 19th-century old glass trade seed beads, all being sinew sewn as well. The beadwork shows a four-point morning star with tipi / triangled designs and tab / bands showing a greasy light blue background and design in cobalt, greasy butterscotch and semi-transparent dark green. The original Indian tanned buffalo hide tongue, ankle and ties are still present. The historic Indian Wars set is comprised of Indian tanned Great American Bison / Buffalo hide with Bison / Buffalo parfleche rawhide hard sole bottoms being completely sinew sewn covered on the tops with mineral pigment yellow ocher / ochre paint in a “Buffalo Track” pattern covered with early 19th-century old glass trade seed beads in a geometric pattern, all being sinew sewn as well. The beadwork shows a unique diamond and bar or cross geometric pattern, a documented Cheyenne and Northern Cheyenne pattern sinew sewn with colors of chalk white, red white heart, cobalt, greasy light blue and greasy yellow. Unique and rare to have such prominent mineral pigment yellow ocher paint, a truly beautiful and artistic, historic attribute. Provenance: From the collection of Bruce VanLandingham Sundog gallery and museum Bozeman, Montana with the original tag which reads, “Northern Cheyenne Child’s Moccasins c.1870s-1880s $1,650 BV0488 Sundog Fine Art”. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce was also the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery, this piece is directly from the collection. The set is very well preserved in museum-grade condition showing little to no bead loss mostly supple / soft hides with well-worn hard soles showing a deep foot worn dark pattern, consistent with the sets early age. Each moccasin measures 5-inches long along the soles by 2.5-inches wide by 2.5-inches high.
