This is a set of Shawnee Native American Indian beaded hide moccasins dating to circa 1870. The set shows an Indian tanned hide construction in traditional Shawnee form with folded over ankle section and one piece top and base all being soft. The bases and top are all made from one piece with soft Indian tanned hide and shows remnants of yellow ocher. The tops and ankle edge are all beaded with period correct beadwork in colors of chalk white, cobalt, medium green, and semi-transparent red. The set are in well preserved condition. Shawnee beadwork items from circa 1870 are immensely scarce with moccasins being even more rare on the public market. In 2010 Cowan's offered a single Shawnee 19th Century moccasin (not a set) with an $1,800 value and the only other example can be seen in The Met Michael C. Rockefeller Wing museum exhibit as circa 1810-1815 Wyandot or Shawnee. This set shows no obvious damage and is in well displayed condition.
