This is an excellent Blackfeet beaded snake umbilical fetish dating to circa 1880 from the Bruce VanLandingham Sundog collection. The piece is comprised of Indian tanned hide being sinew sewn with period correct 19th Century glass trade seed beads in a geometric pattern. The beadwork includes a fancy edge of greasy yellow with rope beaded rear loop or fringe in chalk white and greasy blue and body in semi-transparent Cheyenne pink chalk white and greasy blue. The piece is all sinew sewn and shows some slight bead loss, but overall is well preserved. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce was also the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery, this piece is directly from the collection. The ball shows little bead loss and overall displays well. Measures 11.25"L. The piece is exceedingly rare from the Blackfeet or Blackfoot Indians and displays beautifully. The bottom has a tie of clear line tied onto the front two arms allowing the piece to be displayed on the wall. Museum collection number E1009.
