The lot features a unique fully beaded awl case with long beaded fringes and flap dating to circa 1880 from the Sioux Native American Indians. The bag is constructed from Indian tanned Buffalo hide which is covered completely in period correct 19th Century glass trade seed beads. The banded linear and geometric pattern shows a sky padre blue background with bands of Cheyenne pink and cobalt. The beadwork and bag is sinew sewn. The piece has a long top flap which holds two fully beaded thick fringes and two long thick fully beaded thick fringes on the base of the bag itself. One of the more intricate and beautifully beaded awl cases offered for public sale. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce was also the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery, this piece is directly from the collection. The bag shows very slight bead loss and stiffening of the hide. Measures overall 23"L. The bottom fringe and awl case have a separation with small sinew. Museum collection number E1023.
