This is an exceptional set of circa 1880 Southern Cheyenne beaded buffalo hide moccasins from a large child or small woman from the ex-collection of Bruce VanLandingham Sundog museum & gallery with original tag. The moccasins exhibit Indian tanned buffalo bison hide that is completely sinew sewn showing thick buffalo bison parfleche rawhide hard sole bottoms the entire tops are covered in period correct 1800’s glass trade seed beaded geometric beadwork that is also sinew sewn. The set shows an iconic buffalo track, tipi pictorial and checkering design. The sets shows a base in greasy light blue with pattern in red white heart, cobalt, chalk white and greasy blue. The set shows the original ties, medium height ankle, original tongue. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Bruce VanLandingham Sundog Gallery and museum Bozeman, Montana with the original tag which reads, “Southern Cheyenne Child’s Moccasins c.1880 $1,250 / BV0077”. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce was also the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery, this piece is directly from the collection. The set is well kept in museum presentation condition showing hard soles, tops with some stiffness but mostly supple with no major damages or large cracks, and little to no bead loss. Each moccasin measures 7.5-inches long by 3.5-inches high by 3-inches wide (For reference, these are larger “child” moccasins with adult versions being in the 8 to 10-inch long range).
