This is an original silver gelatin albumen image of a Lakota Sioux in feathered headdress dating to circa 1887-1890 from the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show in England by photographer Geoffrey Duncan. The image shows a fantastic portrait of a Lakota Sioux with feathered headdress with beaded brow band wearing a cape or dress with Rocky Mountain Elk teeth adornment, beaded necklace, silver cross and necklace with fully beaded high top moccasins. Geoffrey Duncan has been documented as doing studio work for Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show during their 1887 and 1890 Britian tour with this being correctly marked on the back, “Day and Electric Light Studio Children a Specialty Geoffrey Duncan Photographic Artist 40, Lillie Rd Earls Court S.W. Business Hours 9 till 6. Wednesday 9-12. Sundays 2-5. Closed all Bank Holidays Sitting after 6 p.m. By appointment only.” The top is marked in pencil “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West”. On the front, “Geoffrey Duncan 40 Lillie Road, Earls Court S.W.” There are several images documented as Buffalo Bil’s Wild West Show by Geoffrey Duncan. In 1887 Buffalo Bill and an entourage of 100 whites, 97 Indians, 180 horses, 18 buffalo, 10 elk, 5 Texan steers, 4 donkeys and 2 deer traveled to England to help celebrate the Jubilee Year of Queen Victoria. In addition to staging twice-a-day shows during a five-month stay in London for crowds that averaged around 30,000, the Wild West troupe gave a command performance for the queen in which the Prince of Wales and the kings of Belgium, Greece, Saxony and Denmark rode around the arena in a stagecoach with Buffalo Bill fending off marauding Indians from the driver's seat. In the process, Buffalo Bill's pop interpretation of the American frontier was validated as high culture and for the next five years the Wild West toured the major capitals of Europe. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. The silver gelatin albumen image has loss to the left side with some fraying and water damage to the top edge of the image. Measures 6 5/8” by 4 3/8. U6.
