The lot features a circa 1890-1900’s fully beaded puberty ball from the Cheyenne Native American Indians and is from the Bruce VanLandingham Sundog collection. The ball is comprised of Indian tanned hide and is stuffed into a spherical ball shape and further covered in glass trade seed beads in a banded geometric pattern, all early original beads. The beadwork shows colors of greasy green, greasy yellow, Cheyenne pink, cobalt, chalk white, red white heart, lilac, blue amongst many others in the crazy beaded sections. Puberty balls were typically highly beaded and used for a girls puberty rite, with early examples being immensely rare. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce was also the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery, this piece is directly from the collection. The ball shows little to no bead loss and is in good condition. Measures overall 2” in diameter.
