This is a fine set of men's hide beaded leggings from the Comanche Indians, circa 1890-1910. Provenance: Collected from the Jason Tyler Gallery of Toledo, Ohio in 2008 for over $3,500; Then from a private museum Native American collection in Paris, France. The set shows bison brain-tanned buckskin hide with yellow mineral pigment ocher / ochre painted surface and fancy frilly fringes along the outside border with slight purple adornment. Along the end of both men's leggings there shows a cuff of beadwork on thick Buffalo Bison hide which wraps around front, side and back of each. The beadwork is all sinew sewn and shows 19th Century glass trade seed beadwork in a classic geometric pattern showing colors of chalk white, greasy butterscotch yellow, medium green, cobalt, and semi-transparent yellow. The beadwork shows designs similar to the tab, horse track or buffalo track, hour glass and river or snake. Running down the outside of each leg piece and just inside the long frilly Indian hide fringes is a row of German silver buttons and beaded fringes showing early Czechoslovakian bugle cut glass tube beads in amber, cobalt and a smoky grey with one wound glass semi-transparent pony bead at the end. These are truly beautiful men's warrior leggings with nice beadwork and wonderful yellow ocher rubbings. Each measures approximately 46"L x 24"W with fringes laid out.*
