Featured in this lot is this Navajo third phase Chief's Blanket rug circa 1890's from the Bruce VanLandingham Sundog collection. This rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool construction that features a beautiful banded decoration with stepped medallions in the corners with a central medallion shown in its center and shows coloration of medium red, light brown, dark grey, and off white. The Third Phase Navajo Chief’s Blanket, for many collectors, may be the most artistic of the Chief’s Blankets. Composed of nine diamond or Cross formations, these blankets were made in the 1860 to 1890 time frame. Composed of raveled natural dyed red yarns, natural churro indigo blue and white and/or brown stripes, third phase blankets can command prices upward of $175,000, though a good example usually brings closer to $75,000 – $100,000. The condition of this Navajo Third Phase rug is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition for its age. The measurements of this Navajo Third Phase rug is 74" x 51". Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery.
