The lot features a catlinite carved and etched tomahawk axe from the Northern Plains Native American Indians dating to the early-to-mid-1900’s. The piece shows a traditional axe shape carved entirely of a solid piece of catlinite pipestone showing a deep red to speckled pink coloring. The axe head shows an etched design; one side shows a raven, snake and Elk; the other side shows a five-point star, bow and arrows and headdress warrior or chief human figure. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and acquired by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. The piece is well kept and measures 13”L by 5”W.
