Featured in this lot is a Navajo Native American Fox mine Turquoise Nugget Necklace, circa early to mid 1900s. This necklace displays 68 uncut nuggets from the Fox turquoise mine. The Fox Turquoise mine, once called the Cortez mine, is found in Lander County, Nevada. It was one of the largest producing mines in Nevada. The location was known to Native Americans in the area for centuries, but the first official claim was filed in 1914 by Charles Schmidtlein and Johnny Francis. Fox Turquoise can be found in various shades of green and blue with both often occurring in the same stone and the higher grade material is quite hard. This necklace has been restrung, from top to bottom graduated German Silver hollow beads separating each turquoise nugget. Nugget sizes range mostly medium with larger nuggets interspersed from the middle of the necklace downward. Necklace is stunning in appearance and exhibits prominent matrix throughout. Measures 12.5" in length, the larger nuggets are 1.5"L approximately.
