The lot features a fantastic set of pictorial polychrome painted hide horse saddle bags from the Plains Indians dating to circa 1920. The bags have the original Allard Auction tag and was found to be an original 1920 Plains set and sold in their March 2004 sale. The saddle bag shows a tanned-hide with thick thread sewn edges and mineral pigment polychrome painted pictorial design on both sides showing a Chief or Warrior on horseback holding a rifle with long headdress and four warrior's in front holding rifles, pistol and war club all in war regalia, below is a geometric pattern. The other side shows a similar scene with a few differences, including a bow and arrow, dag knife and lance spear. The inside has a dark worn patina from honest age and use. Provenance: From a private collection outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; sold by Allard Auctions in March 2004 for $1,140 (w/ bp). Truly an excellent set of saddle bags that display fantastically and are truly a unique piece. Measures overall when laid out flat 54"L by 18.25"W.
