Featured in this lot is an Antique Tohono O’odham Pima Indians Whirling Logs Basket, circa 1920s, a coiled flared bowl with multiple hooked elements issuing from a pinwheel center. This fine tightly woven Pima Indian basket has an extensive pattern around the body and a dark rim made of Devil’s Claw. Tohono O’odham (People of the Desert) are a Native American people of the Sonoran Desert, residing primarily in the U.S. state of Arizona and the northern Mexican state of Sonora. This basket was handmade using Native Plants such as Yucca, Beargrass, and Devils Claw. These Native American weavers rely on the natural colors of the desert plants. Indian Basket forms include a variety of shapes to include Trays, Baskets with Lids, Pictorial Baskets, and Plaques. They gather Sonoran Desert plant materials by hand to weave baskets in the traditional way. The inner coil, the warp, is made from split Beargrass and the outer design, the weft, is typically made from Soaptree Yucca (natural green or sun-bleached white). Sometimes other materials are woven into the basket's design using Devil's Claw (black), or in more rare instances, the root from the Banana Yucca (red). The Whirling Log symbol is associated with a narrative involving a man (sometimes called the Culture Hero) who takes a journey down the San Juan River in a hollowed out log canoe. During his adventure, he encounters whirlpools and a special event where the San Juan River meets the Colorado River. There he comes upon a whirling cross with Yei figures seated on the cross. From the yeis he learns much knowledge which he takes back to his people. Since World War II, the use of the Whirling Logs in Native American artifacts has been confined mainly to rugs. This Tohono O’odham Pima Whirling Logs Basket is in fine condition, especially considering its near 100 years of age. There is a 1/2" hole on the bottom rim along with approximately 3" of cumulative stitch losses along the bottom rim as well. Some unknown staining is noted on the interior, no other obvious marring noted. Basket measures 6"W x 7.25"H, base is 5"W.
