Featured in this lot is this 1940-50s Hood Canvas Footwear die-cut cardboard hanger sign. The company started as Hood Rubber Company and was founded by G. H. Hood in 1896. The Hood Rubber Company, had its headquarters in Watertown, Massachusetts, and first made rubber footwear, such as rubber-soled shoes and rain boots. The business quickly established a reputation for creating sturdy, high-quality footwear, and during World War II, it changed its focus to producing military boots for the American Armed Forces. The Hood Rubber Company expanded its product line in the years following World War II to include work boots, athletic shoes, and other kinds of footwear. The business continued to come up with new ideas and developing fresh materials and production methods, and its goods were still in high demand in the middle of the 20th century. The Hood Rubber Company, however, started to experience difficulties in the 1970s as a result of rising competition from other shoe makers and shifting consumer preferences. The company ultimately closed its doors in 1979, bringing an end to its nearly 100-year history of producing high-quality footwear. The sign shows a die-cut cardboard construction and shows colors of brown, tan, white, blue and black. The top of the sign shows an oval shape reading, "Hood Wurkshu Canvas Footwear" and below that it shows a pair of shoes from the Hood Canvas company. In between the pair of shoes it reads, "For Economy Comfort And Hard Wear". The sign shows some slight wear from its vintage age but is still in good readable condition. There are no signs of obvious damage present. The sign measures 12" L x 12 1/4" W.
