Featured in this lot is a Navajo Yei Be Chei figural polychrome rug circa 1940s. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool construction with a heathered grey and black border with an off white field and shows a Yei Be Chei figural woven into the center of the field with colors such as medium red, black, and orange coloration with a red cross between its legs. The Yeibichai weavings are highly individual, therefore, different elements may be found in them. Male Yeis have round heads and Female Yeis have square heads. Other elements included may be: gourds, ruffs of spruce around the neck, fox pelts, moccasins, woven garters or sashes, arrows, corn, clouds, stars, and more. The thread count is 96 threads per square inch. The condition of this Navajo Yei Be Chei rug is good with the tassels on each of the corners missing, but otherwise it shows good overall condition. The measurements of this rug are 31" x 34". Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery.*
