Featured in this lot is this Vintage Hudson's Bay Company Four Point Trade Wool Blanket, circa 1950s-1970s. The blanket shows the Hudson's Bay Company tag and original construction, indicating that it was made in England. This is a red wool blanket with two large wide stripes of black on both sides of the blanket. This blanket also displays four points as black stripes on the left hand side of the blanket. Although the Hudson's Bay Company didn't originate the point system for trade blankets, they popularized this system of quality identification and size. In the days of fur trapping and trading, The system was introduced by French weavers in the 18th century to indicate size, allowing trappers to identify the blanket's value and dimensions without unfolding it. Originally used for trading with Indigenous peoples, they have become a lasting symbol of Canadiana. Still manufactured, the 4-point remains a popular, heavy-duty blanket for cabins and, historically, for fashioning coat. These durable blankets were staples of the Canadian fur trade. This blanket is in good condition overall, with some wear across the tag and show some stains throughout the blanket. This Hudson's Bay blanket measures 72" wide by 64" long, weight is 5lb, 12oz.
