Featured in this lot are two photos of Colorado views taken by two different Colorado photographers, Charles Weitfle and L.K. Oldroyd in the 1870s-1880s. Charles Weitfle (1836–1921), a German-born photographer, rose to prominence in the American West. He ran studios in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska. Weitfle was largely active in Colorado during the 1870s and 1880s, producing stereoviews and cabinet cards of mining towns, railroads, and rough mountain vistas. His art is well regarded for capturing early Colorado villages such as Central City, Leadville, and Georgetown during the mining boom. He also photographed Native American scenes and frontier life, frequently using the mark "Weitfle & Co." . His photo shows The Gorge, at Upper Falls Twin Lakes in Colorado. The waterfall cuts through the middle of the photo and shows fallen logs and bushes hanging over the water. The bottom of the photo reasd, "308-A / The Gorge At Upper Falls Twin Lakes". The back reads, "Weitfle's Photographic Views of Colorado Scenery / Published and for sale wholesale and retail at Central city, Colo.". Though best known for his collection of Abraham Lincoln memorabilia and photography in Washington, D.C., L.K. Oldroyd (1851-1930) also worked in Colorado during his career. While his time in the state was less prominent than that of other regional photographers, Oldroyd produced portraits and scenic views during his western travels, contributing to the visual documentation of life in Colorado. His photo shows the busy street life of State Street in Leadville, Colorado in the late 1870s. Various people line the sidewalks and the middle of the road. The foreground shows five men standing around a pile of lumber. The back of the photo features a partially torn sticker reading, "L.K. Oldroyd / Artistic Series of Famous Rocky / Published at Colorado Springs,". The photos show good condition overall with slight wear present from their age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. Oldroyd's photo measures 3 7/8" L x 7" W, while Weitfle's measures 7" L x 4 1/2" W. They have a collective weight of under 6 ounces.
