The lot features a circa early 1900-1910’s polychrome painted parfleche war bonnet headdress case from Blackfeet Chief Little Dog, Last Pikunni War Chief, of all the Blackfeet from the Blackfeet Indian Reservation outside of Glacier Park in Montana. Chief Little Dog’s grandson Harvey Little Dog was the keeper of the family possessions and passed away in 2010. This came directly from the family and was said to have been owned and used by Chief Little Dog and his descendants. His warlike activities spanned an area from the Blackfoot territories to the Colorado river, and he was the leader of the Black-Patched-Moccasin Band. He died in 1916. The piece exhibits thick parfleche rawhide showing a cylindrical tube single large piece tied with Indian tanned lacing with round parfleche rawhide cap ends all covered with a geometric polychrome painted design in colors of blue, green, yellow and pink. There are long Indian tanned hide fringes and ties still attached. Along with an old strand of green trade clothe ribbon and two old 19th-century wound glass cobalt trade beads. This would have held a war bonnet / feathered headdress at one point and truly a work of art. Provenance: From the Chief Little Dog, Last Pikunni War Chief, of all the Blackfeet. From his grandson Harvey Little Dog who was the keeper of the family possessions and passed away in 2010. Directly from the family and was said to have been owned and used by Chief Little Dog or his descendants. Chief Little Dog’s was the leader of the Black-Patched-Moccasin Band of the Blackfeet and he died in 1916. From the Little Dog family from the Blackfoot Indian Reservation outside of Glacier National Park in Northern Montana. Several photographs of Blackfeet Pukunni War Chief Little Dog photographs are shown in the photo-gallery. The bonnet case tube by itself measures overall 20.5-inches long and about 4.25-inches in diameter with the ties and fringes is about 26-inches long by 25-inches wide.
