The lot features two original photographs by Fred H. Kisser (1878-1955) circa 1909 and 1910 of Glacier National Park contracted by the Great Northern Railway. Both show the original stamp on the back marked “In reproducing this picture in any form COPYRIGHT NOTICE must appear as follows, Copyright 1909 (and the other 1910) by Kiser Photo Co. For Great Northern Railway.” Each photograph is marked on the front bottom left. “Copyright 1909 (other 1910) by Kiser Photo Co., Portland, Or.” Fred H. Kiser was an accomplished mountaineer and one of the most successful landscape and commercial photographers in the American West during the first two decades of the early 1900’s. He is credited with popularizing Crater Lark National park and the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon as well as helping establishing Glacier National Park in Montana. He and his brother Oscar operated the Lewis and Clark Official Photographic Co. He was contracted by the Great Northern Railway to photograph Northwestern Montana and Glacier National Park with his more than 100 of his photograph artograph exhibit at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., being credited with giving the final push to gain Congressional approval for establishing Glacier National Park in 1910. This fact makes these two photographs by Kiser predating the National Park status and in and of themselves worked towards the making of such an important and historic park itself. Each photograph has graphite handwriting on the back first showing 4433 and the other 4713 as well as Park near ___ Lake (the lake name is hard to read, possibly a T or S or L ending in a G or Y; possibly Lonely Lake). Both are in good condition showing iconic and beautiful black and white photographs of Glacier with pristine detail. Each measures 9.25” by 7 3/8”. Not framed.
