For your consideration this lot features a Rare Vintage American Revolution Era Most Noble of the Order of the Garter Cuttoe Hunting Sword, circa 1760-1820. The Most Noble Order of the Garter is highest order of chivalry in England, and this sword is different to most in that it bears the seal of that order instead of the normal Royal Coat of Arms; this means the officer who once owned and held it was a member of that order and a very important infantry officer indeed. Knights of the Garter are chosen personally by the Sovereign to honour those who have held public office, who have contributed in a particular way to national life or who have served the Sovereign personally. This style of cuttoe / hunting sword was very popular during the latter half of the 18th century, and are noted as being widely carried during the American Revolutionary War. George Washington favoured a hunting sword as his sidearm. One one side of the blade is the seal of the Order of the Garter with the inscribed ancient Anglo-Norman motto, "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE", meaning "shamed be whoever thinks ill of it", or translated as "shame on anyone who thinks evil of it". Appears both hand-carved figural stag handle and brass carved shell guard, circa 1650, were added later. Guard is intact yet loose, hilt end missing on one side. Despite some minor light pitting, the blade is nice looking and the overall appearance of this American Colonial to Revolutionary War period sword is nice. Blade is 19.75"L x 1"W, full length 25"L x 3"W, weight 1lb, 4oz.
