The lot features an early-to-mid 1800s sword lance spear from the Southern Plains Indians of Texas, likely from the Comanche. The spear exhibits an 18th century (1700s) Spanish Colonial Espada Ancha Sword used by Spanish soldiers in Southwestern North America. The forged iron intimidating saber was known as the espada ancho or broad sword. Remnants of the original Spanish engraving is still present on the blade. Likely captured during the late 1700s early 1800s by the Southern Plains Indians of Texas and fashioned into a spear. The blade is wedged between two cut pieces from the handle which has then been wrapped with thick buffalo / bison parfleche rawhide and sewn with sinew and rawhide lacing. The long wood haft has been stripped and polished smooth over the many years of use with a deep rich patina. At the bottom gripping area are two wrapped sections of old copper telegraph wire which has a dark coloring and green patina. The telegraph wire was likely added by the warrior who owned this piece in the mid-1800s, as many Southern Plains Indians were known to raid and destroy the wires. The inclusion of the 1700s Spanish Colonial Espada Ancha Sword pre-dates the Spanish-Texan, Mexican and later Anglo-Texans on the Southern Plains, making this truly a very desirable and rare piece. Provenance: From a prominent Native American collection in Wisconsin. The piece is well kept with no major damages and rich original patina. For reference see the Southern Plains Sword Lance circa 1860 sold by Heritage in 2018 for $5,000 (w/ bp) and the Southern Plains Lance from the Robert Jerich and Bob Vandenberg collections which sold at Cowan's Auction in 2020 for $2,816 (w/ bp) as well as the Southern Plains Sword Lance mid-1800’s from Ciscos Gallery for $7,500. The Comanche of Texas were at this items time period, one of the most powerful mounted cavalry in the world and had complete control of the Southern Plains, items from this period are typically without embellishment and were purely used as weapons of war. Measures overall 67"L with the visible blade being about 20.5”L*.
