This is an astounding, circa 1820-1840 Presentation grade pipe tomahawk from the noted Jan Sorgenfrei (1942-2012) and Clem Caldwell collections. The piece has an expertly blacksmith hand-forged early pattern pip tomahawk head with a hand-stipple engraved figure of an American Blad Eagle wearing a U.S. themed shield along with having a war lance and two arrows in its claws / talons. The head is secured to the haft handle with poured pewter on both sides of the eyelet hole with the top of the handle protruding past the eyelet showing the exposed hand drilled clean out hole. The handle has two inlaid large bands of pewter at the center. There is a small split at the smoking tip, which shows nice patina from honest use. The club was noted as being waxed regularly by Jan Sorgenfrei. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Clem Caldwell (1918-2007) famed collector of pre-historic and historic relics, sold by Clem to Jan Sorgenfrei (1942-2012) former owner of Old Barn in Findlay, Ohio and noted collector, the majority of Jan’s collection sold at Cowan’s in 2017, noted as previously being in a gallery museum collection of Jan Sorgenfrei’s next to a J. Wilson pipe and Dag Knives. Measures overall 17 5/8”L handle with the head being 7.75”L and 2 5/8”L across the bottom of the blade. For similar authentic Indian tomahawks with figural eagle engravings on the blade, see "American Indian Tomahawks" (1965) by Harold Peterson figures 124 and 303; "Tomahawks and Pipe Axes of the American Frontier" (1995) by John Baldwin figure 59; and "Indian Tomahawks and Frontiersmen Belt Axes" (1995) by James Hartzler & Daniel Knowles page 126 figure 20, and page 143 figure 55.
