This is a fantastic, circa 1830-1850 Missouri War Axe tomahawk attributed to the Hidatsa / Mandan of the upper Missouri River Basin. This example shows a blacksmith hand-forged iron blade axe head with a weeping heart cutout at the center of the blade. The head is on what is believed to be an early or possibly original weathered wooden haft handle. The example shows no adornments such as tacking, drops or other art appeals items. There is traces of old black mineral pigment paint on the handle. This lends to this being an early weapon and not a more elaborate ceremonial or treaty piece.
Provenance: Ex-John Painter collection, private Southern-California Native American antiquities and weapons collection, published in “The Mark Francis Collection of American Indian Art” 2009 by Mark Francis on page 45 figure 59 and in the 2010 book, “The Missouri War Axe: War Tomahawk of the Plains and Prairies” on page 45 figure 56.
Measures overall 20.25”L handle with the head being 7.25”L by 3.25”W.
