This is a beautiful, finely forged iron pipe tomahawk with widely flaring blade from the 19th Century and the Woodlands Iroquois tribes. The head features blacksmith hand forged iron with an inward widely flaring curved blade having a small round eyelet / eye hole with thick eye body having heavy forged steps, similar to other documented Iroquois Woodland pipe tomahawks. The top of the eye has forged molded diamond chevrons. Widely flaring medium to small blades such as this date to circa 1820-1850 with this example having a thin, tall pipe bowl putting it closer to the late era of this region, circa 1850. For another similar example see the 1965, "American Indian Tomahawks" by Harold L. Peterson page 110-111, figure 148, as well as other early 1800s Woodlands examples in this book. The pipe tomahawk head is accompanied by a hardwood haft with dark red coloring secured with brass covered metal tacks, clean out plug intact. The handle is adorned with brass covered metal tacks, a later addition. Provenance: From a private Native American collection in Northern California. Measures overall 17.75" with the head being 7"L x 2 7/8"W across the blade.*
