This is a stunning and artful circa 1860-1870 Cheyenne Calumet peace pipe exhibiting a finely inlaid bowl and quilled stem, collected in Colorado. The pipe bowl shows a classic elbow to “T” form carved from black steatite showing a carved beveled body with prominent carved octagonal pipe to stem connection inlaid with two bands of silver pewter, the bowl a round flaring example inlaid with a beautiful, artful design with more silver pewter with black steatite showing through and inlaid with Minnesota red catlinite pipestone. The bowl shows obvious evidence of old smoking use. The piece shows an original carved wooden hardwood stem which is decorated with a small hasp of fur, small plume feathers and the entire second half covered in fine porcupine quill quillwork in banded natural colors of red and white / cream. The stem to bowl connection area shows a wide rectangular shape which tapers slightly and shows wraps of sinew with the plume, the stem tapers into the gripping area which is completely wrapped and then tapers out to shows the nicely carved smoking top. Provenance: From a fine private collection of early Native American antiques. The piece is well kept with little to no quill loss, nice deep patina across the entire piece. Together, overall the set measures 24-inches in length. The pipe bowl itself measures 4-inches in length by 2.5-inches tall. The stem by itself measures 21-inches in length.
