The lot features a phenomenal and large circa 1860-1870 Sioux “Chief’s” Calumet peace pipe bowl and stem collected from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota from the ex-collection of Jim Aplan of Piedmont, South Dakota. The bowl exhibits a classic and large “T” pipe bowl carved from red Minnesota pipestone, known as “catlinite” showing colors of rich red to speckled pink having a rounded pipe to stem section with flat carved bottom and tapering hexagonal carved end with tall round bowl showing old signs of smoking honest patina. Paired with a carved solid hardwood stem which is round cut and has extensive hot file brandings, a dark chocolate coloring with a nice, shiny patina. Well-kept set showing no major damage and nice honest patina. For other large Chief size catlinite bowl and stem examples, see the Sioux Calumet stem and Catlinite bowl sold by Cowan's Auction in 2013 for $23,000; the Sioux Catlinite bowl and stem also sold by Cowan's for $10,000 in 2019; the Sioux Chief Catlinite pipe and stem c. 1890 sold by our company in 2014 for $5,074; and the Central Plains Catlinite bowl and stem sold by Skinner Auction in 2011 for $4,750. Together overall the set measures 25.5-inches in length. The pipe bowl by itself measures 8.25-inches long by 4.75-inches tall. Stem by itself is 19.5-inches long.
