This is an outstanding circa 1870 Arikara bow with sinew backing and porcupine quillwork from the ex-collection of Nathan Lyday. The bow is carved of wood and is backed in sinew, the gripping area is wrapped in Indian tanned hide as are two areas. There are four sections of Indian tanned hide wrappings that are dyed with mineral pigment red as well as wrappings of porcupine quill quillwork in red and natural white / cream. The top section has red dyed horse tail hair. The sinew backing is tied off at each nock end. Provenance: Nathan Lyday New Albany, Ohio. Reference: Very similar to two examples illustrated on page 138 (Field Museum) and page 147 (Smithsonian Institution) in Steve Alley and Jim Hamm, Encyclopedia of Native American Bows, Arrows, and Quivers, Volume 2, Plains and Southwest. Goldthwaite, Texas: Bois d'Arc Press, 2002. The bow is well kept with some slight signs of preservation. Measures overall 36.75-inches in length.
