This is an exceptional fully beaded vest dating to circa 1870 from the Lakota Sioux on buffalo hide from a prominent Wisconsin private collection. The piece exhibits Indian tanned Great American Bison Buffalo hide covered in early and classic geometric Lakota Sioux beadwork showing colors of greasy semi-translucent medium blue, cobalt, greasy green, red white heart, chalk white and faceted metal 1800’s period correct glass trade seed beads. The beadwork shows Maltese crosses, tipi like pattern, forked and tab designs amongst others covered on the front, sides and back. The beadwork is sewn with sinew. The inside shows an early calico trade clothe lining and the front shows Indian tanned hide ties. This is a child’s vest showing a nice medium size and truly amazing, early age. Provenance: From a prominent Native American private collection from Wisconsin same as the Cheyenne Ann Strange Owl family collection including the war shirt that sold by our company NAAC in November 2023 for $46,875. Measures as it lays closed 13.25-inches wide by 11-inches tall. When open it is about 25-inches wide (all measurements without ties). Fully beaded child's vest of this high quality of beadwork from the 19th-century are highly collectible with examples bringing as much as over $26,000 (such as the Cheyenne example sold by Cowan's / Freeman / Hindman in 2019) and is very similar to the Sioux Child's Vest sold in 2021 by Cowan's for over $7,000. The piece shows some hide stiffening and slight old bead loss, but displays beautifully.
