The lot features a wonderful circa 1870-1880 Sioux Polychrome Painted Parfleche Envelope in a large size constructed from buffalo hide; from the ex-March in Montana Mantiou Gallery; from a Jackson, Wyoming collection; from the same collection as the former parfleche envelope from Frank Phillips (1873-1950) Woolaroc Museum. This is a fabulous circa 1870-1880 Sioux Polychrome Painted Parfleche Envelope in a large size constructed from buffalo hide showing wonderful polychrome mineral pigment paint in colors of green, red, yellow and blue with a wonderful hourglass pattern and diamond cross-hatch pattering with fine detail and wonderful preservation. Provenance: From a private Native American collection in Jackson, Wyoming; ex-March in Montana Manitou Gallery; from the same collection as the Frank Phillips (1873-1950) Woolaroc Museum parfleche in the former lot. The piece is well preserved overall with a nice patina from honest age and use, much of the mineral pigment paint is still intact, the original Indian tanned buffalo hide ties are still present. There are several old parfleche repairs. The inside is filled with Styrofoam for museum display. This is a stunning and large example. Measures overall 24-inches by 14-inches and about 5.5-inches thick.
