This is a stunning circa 1870’s Sioux calumet puzzle stem painted and tacked with a catlinite pipe stem bowl from a private French collection. The stem shows a carved wood puzzle stem with double cutout, typical of Santee Sioux examples, having a wide curved body having bands of red-ocher / ochre mineral pigment painted bands further accented by bands of old solid brass square shank trade tacks. The bowl is a T-shape carved from pipestone catlinite with a square stepped pipe stem connection and tapering tall bowl with small ridge at the top. The bowl has dark red to speckled pink coloring, and a well smoked bowl. The set has a nice coloring from age and is a nice Indian Wars era example. Provenance: From an ex-private collector in Aix-en-Provence, France and ex-private collection out of Paris, France. Overall measures 27.25-inches long; bowl is 3 7/8-inches by 2 5/8-inches by 1 3/8-inches; stem is 24 5/8-inches long by 2-inches wide.
