Featured in this lot is this collection of anthropological hardback literature circa 1880 - 1910. The first book is 1907 Bureau of American Ethnology Bulletin 30 Handbook of American Indians North of Mexico edited by Frederick Webb Hodge. Hodge compiled an alphabetical handbook of American Indians north of Mexico in two volumes. This first volume contains alphabetical information on American Indians ranging from the letters A to M including Eskimos, tribes, archeology, arts, Apaches, Cherokees, Chippewa, Hiawatha, linguistic families and much more. This 1907 edition includes numerous photogravure illustrations throughout as well as a large folded color linguistic map of North America by J. W. Powell. The second book is called The Races of Mankind by Robert Brown and is divided into several volumes, each focusing on different regions and peoples of the world. Brown aimed to provide a comprehensive survey of humanity, documenting the physical and cultural characteristics of various groups. This is Vol. I and is a popular description of the characteristics, manners, and customs of the principal varieties of the Human Family. The third book is first edition The Indians: Their Manners and Customs by John McLean, published in 1889, is a significant work that provides insights into the lives, traditions, and social structures of various Indigenous peoples in North America. McLean, a clergyman and scholar, wrote this book based on his extensive travels and interactions with Indigenous communities, primarily in Canada. This copy also shows eighteen full-page illustrations. The condition of these books is well preserved with some wear tot eh covers with wear tot eh corners and the spines with some browning to the pages consistent with the age.
